The selection process
Unlike many traditional venture capital companies our selection process is centered around a thesis of investment growth through operational improvement, commercialization and scale. This requires a company with an innovative idea which has been developed and validated, at least in part. In line with other AITC program restrictions below, the idea must be a technology, product or process (including software) created in Alberta, which is going through the initial stages of commercialization. Notwithstanding the inclusion in the ATIC program, Alberta Venture Link does not invest in tourism, digital media and post production companies. Target industries and investments include:
After identifying a qualifying business, we need to understand where the founders want to take their idea and if their goals align with our own. This can be the most important step for both investors and entrepreneurs alike, as any divergence in strategy can derail even the brightest outlook. This includes what the business originally set out to achieve, long-term goals and how the team intend to achieve them.
Finally, it’s our job to complete a strategic plan for investment including valuation, target performance, improvements and evolutions. We call these Playbooks because they outline our relationship over the lifespan of the investment including growth, process improvement, corporate development, capital structure and exit. With everyone on the same page, we know what the game plan is and get to work.
The AITC program presents a massive opportunity for investors and growing companies across Alberta. Legislative requirements include a proprietary technology, product or process, Alberta operations with less than 100 staff, and equity investments and up to $10 million per investment, per year.More
